| Thorough cleansing with antibacterial soap and water will prevent infection
Dirt that is not removed may leave a permanent tattoo-like scar
If a dressing sticks to the wound, soak it in a warm water or diluted hydrogen peroxide solution for a few minutes |

Urgent Care - Have you identified one or more of the following symptoms?
- Unable to remove dirt or debris
- Symptoms of infection (pain, redness, swelling, fever and/or drainage)
- Last tetanus shot was 5 years ago or longer
- Scrape hot to touch with red streaks coming from scrape

Self-Management - You can help in the following ways:
- Wash hands before starting self-management
- Loosen dirt and other foreign objects by flushing with lots of warm water or diluted hydrogen peroxide and water (1:1)
- Wash area with an antibacterial soap and lots of warm water
- Remove large pieces of debris with tweezers
- Apply light film of antibacterial ointment (Polysporin, Neosporin, Bacitracin)
- Cover with non-stick bandage or Band-Aid
- Change bandage every 12 hours or as needed
- Leave open to air after 24 hours
