  • Thorough cleansing with antibacterial soap and water will prevent infection
  • Dirt that is not removed may leave a permanent tattoo-like scar
  • If a dressing sticks to the wound, soak it in a warm water or diluted hydrogen peroxide solution for a few minutes
  • Urgent Care - Have you identified one or more of the following symptoms?
    • Unable to remove dirt or debris
    • Symptoms of infection (pain, redness, swelling, fever and/or drainage)
    • Last tetanus shot was 5 years ago or longer
    • Scrape hot to touch with red streaks coming from scrape

    Self-Management - You can help in the following ways:
    • Wash hands before starting self-management
    • Loosen dirt and other foreign objects by flushing with lots of warm water or diluted hydrogen peroxide and water (1:1)
    • Wash area with an antibacterial soap and lots of warm water
    • Remove large pieces of debris with tweezers
    • Apply light film of antibacterial ointment (Polysporin, Neosporin, Bacitracin)
    • Cover with non-stick bandage or Band-Aid
    • Change bandage every 12 hours or as needed
    • Leave open to air after 24 hours
